Why Dinosaurs Swallowed Gizzard Stones

As I believe I said before,

A fully grown brachiosaur

Was capable of putting away

Four hundred pounds of leaves a day.

So how, you wonder, did it turn

That soggy mass of leaves and fern,

And moss and twigs and all the rest

Into a form it could digest?

Well, what those creatures did was find

So-called gizzard stones to grind

What they had swallowed into a stew

The way our kitchen blenders do.

Thus, as they slowly ambled round,

The stones inside them gently ground

That fibrous mass inside their bellies

Into digestible sorts of jellies.
